On November 12, 2018 we were contacted by Chicago Police Officer Tlapa about a starving dog in need of emergency medical attention. We were just wrapping up a fundraiser at LeSaint Logistics in Romeoville and told her to get him to Niles Animal Hospital as soon as possible to see Dr. Abete.
Freddie was in pretty bad shape. He was about 2 months old based on the baby teeth he still had in his mouth. He was extremely emaciated. He was anemic and it appears as though someone attempted to unsuccessfully dock his tail. His paw pads and stomach was covered in urine burns.
Freddie was recovered on a traffic stop on the westside of Chicago. The driver stated the dog was in her yard for 2 days and she was taking him to a shelter. His pads have clearly never even walked on pavement and there is no way he would have survived several days of cold November temps in his condition. It’s more likely he was kept in a cage sitting him his own urine.
The driver of the car turned him over to the officer. Since her story couldn’t be proven to be false, no arrest was made but at least the dog now had a chance at survival.
Once again the skills of Dr. Sakas, Dr. Abete and their team at Niles Animal Hospital would be put to the test to save another dying puppy. Small and slow hourly feedings were required day after day. Dr. Sakas would meet with us every evening at 9pm for a final feeding and medication.
The issue came up as to his name. While we all took turns coming up with ideas, it was Dr. Sakas who had just seen the movie Bohemian Rhapsody the day before Freddie’s arrival. Being a huge Rock and Roll fan, Dr. Sakas blurted out, “Let’s name him Freddie after Freddie Mercury!” That was it, his name would be Freddie.
Freddie continued to get stronger and stronger every day and was allowed to go home to continue his recovery.
Today Freddie is living the life he deserves and is now an ambassador for Garrido Stray Rescue Foundation. He loves all people and all animals and is the perfect example of what our network can accomplish.
